Overview
Danube Festive Passage brings together some of Central Europe’s most atmospheric Christmas destinations in an elegant seven-night river cruise from Budapest to Passau.
The experience begins in Budapest, where grand architecture and festive markets provide a memorable introduction to the season. Sailing west, the Danube leads to Bratislava, where medieval streets are transformed by wooden market stalls, local delicacies and seasonal traditions. Vienna follows with its imperial landmarks and celebrated Christmas markets, offering time to explore the city beneath the glow of festive lights.
As the river continues through Austria, the scenery becomes increasingly picturesque, with the Wachau Valley providing a particularly beautiful winter backdrop. Further along the Danube, Linz offers another opportunity to experience Austrian Christmas traditions before the cruise concludes in Passau.
The experience is about more than visiting markets. Local food, regional traditions, guided cultural experiences and time to relax onboard create a well-balanced festive escape. The itinerary visits four countries and six cities, with seven breakfasts, six lunches and seven dinners included.

Day 1 Budapest | Embarkation
Board your river cruise in Budapest and settle into your floating retreat. Meet your Experience Director and fellow travellers over dinner before beginning your festive exploration of the Danube. The evening provides a relaxed introduction to the cruise and the Christmas atmosphere that awaits ashore.
Day 2 Budapest & Danube Bend | Festive Traditions
Explore Budapest with a Local Specialist, visiting Heroes’ Square, Castle Hill, Matthias Church and Fisherman’s Bastion for panoramic views across the Danube. Later, enjoy Budapest’s Christmas markets at your own pace, with opportunities to sample seasonal pastries, roasted nuts and mulled wine.
Day 3 Bratislava | Christmas Markets & Local Flavours
Arrive in Bratislava for a local beer and lunch experience with a head brewer at DOCK7. Later, choose between a guided Old Town walk and Christmas market visit or a MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® experience exploring Slovakia’s Communist-era history and Velvet Revolution.
Day 4 Vienna | Imperial Christmas
Explore Vienna with a drive along the Ringstraße before discovering its Baroque Old Town with a Local Specialist. Visit the city’s celebrated Christmas markets, with time to browse wooden stalls, sample seasonal treats and enjoy the festive atmosphere. An optional visit to Schönbrunn Palace or a classical concert featuring Strauss and Mozart can be added.
Day 5 Wachau Valley | Scenic Sailing
Cruise through the Wachau Valley, one of the Danube’s most picturesque stretches, with vineyards, villages and historic landmarks lining the river. Enjoy a slower day onboard, taking in the winter scenery and the festive atmosphere as the cruise continues through Austria.
Day 6 Linz | Austrian Christmas Traditions
Arrive in Linz and explore the city and its Christmas market. Historic architecture, seasonal stalls and local traditions create a distinctly Austrian festive experience. Return to the ship to continue cruising through the Danube landscape.
Day 7 Passau | Christmas Market & Bavarian Charm
Discover Passau with a Local Specialist, walking through medieval lanes and Baroque squares before visiting its Christmas markets. Alternatively, enjoy a guided hike along the Ilz River. For a taste of Bavarian culture, an optional experience combines local beer, freshly baked pretzels and traditional folk music.
Day 8 Passau | Departure
Enjoy your final breakfast onboard before disembarking in Passau. Your Danube Festive Passage concludes with the memories of Christmas markets, historic cities, local flavours and winter landscapes gathered along the river.
