Itinerary
Day 1 Tokyo
Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel and enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure to explore Japan’s vibrant capital.
Overnight: Tokyo
Day 2 Tokyo to Kumamoto
Travel from Tokyo to Kumamoto.
Option 1 – Shinkansen Train
Travel on the Tokaido–Sanyo Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Hakata, then connect to the Kyushu Shinkansen to Kumamoto.
Journey time: approximately 5 hours 40 minutes.
Option 2 – Domestic Flight
Fly from Haneda Airport to Kumamoto Airport.
Flight time: approximately 1 hour 45 minutes.
Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel.
Overnight: Kumamoto
Day 3 Kumamoto & Yatsushiro
Begin your Kyushu journey with a visit to Kumamoto Castle, one of Japan’s most impressive historic castles. Recently restored after the 2016 earthquake, the castle offers sweeping views of the surrounding city and Mount Aso.
Before departing Kumamoto, visit Higo Yokamon Market, a lively marketplace located at Kumamoto Station where you can sample regional cuisine and purchase traditional bento boxes for the journey ahead.
Travel onward to Yatsushiro, a historic castle town approximately 40 minutes away. Explore the tranquil park surrounding the Yatsushiro Castle ruins, where remnants of stone walls and moats reflect the area’s Edo-period heritage.
Visit nearby Yatsushiro Shrine, home to the colourful Myoken Festival, recognised as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Day 4 Hisatsu Orange Railway & Hinagu Onsen
Today experience one of Kyushu’s most scenic rail journeys aboard the Hisatsu Orange Railway, which follows the spectacular west coast between Yatsushiro and Satsumasendai.
Enjoy breathtaking ocean views, charming seaside villages and peaceful countryside landscapes along the route.
Stop at Hinagu Onsen, a historic hot spring town with more than 600 years of bathing tradition. Stroll through the atmospheric streets and relax in a traditional onsen bath.

Day 5 Coastal Rail Journey to Kagoshima
Continue travelling along the coast toward Kagoshima, one of Kyushu’s most vibrant cities.
Known for its mild climate and dramatic scenery, Kagoshima sits across the bay from Sakurajima, one of Japan’s most active volcanoes.
Spend the afternoon exploring the waterfront, gardens and local cuisine.
Overnight: Kagoshima
Day 6 Kagoshima & Sakurajima
Take a ferry across Kagoshima Bay to Sakurajima, the iconic volcanic island that dominates the city skyline.
Explore volcanic landscapes, lava fields and scenic viewpoints while learning about the island’s geological history.
Return to Kagoshima to visit the beautiful Sengan-en Garden, a traditional Japanese landscape garden offering views of Sakurajima.

Day 7 Kagoshima to Tokyo
Travel back to Tokyo via Shinkansen or domestic flight.
Upon arrival, check into your hotel and enjoy free time exploring Tokyo’s vibrant neighborhoods, restaurants and shopping districts.

Day 8 Tokyo City Discovery
Enjoy a full day discovering Tokyo’s highlights.
